Following is an account in the day in the life of a supplier who is responsible for providing certification documentation for its customer.

Sue, the shipping clerk, has twenty shipments to get out the door. However, she cannot ship the parts without the proper paperwork. She has to go into her computer to find the corresponding paperwork for each job so she can print out those documents for her customers. At least it's easier now that they're scanning the incoming certifications instead of putting them in file cabinets, from where they had to be photocopied before the parts shipped.

She is under pressure to get these jobs out before leaving for the day, but may not be able to complete all shipments before she leaves. She still has to email a couple of cert packages to customers who say they didn't receive them. She hopes the cert packages aren't too large, because large attachments frequently get rejected and have to be FedExed overnight to the customer. They usually blame us, even though the problem is on their end. She also has to email her quality person because one customer said they couldn't process the parts because there was a problem with the heat treat cert.

Joe in sales has gotten three calls today from upset customers who say we didn't send the paperwork with the shipment. He's sure we included the paperwork with the parts, but, unfortunately, customers frequently lose the paperwork. One customer is irate because Joe was out sick for a couple of days and no one got the customer's emails, so the customer is late on their promised delivery now. The customer says they're going to start rejecting parts that show up without the proper paperwork.

Joe's glad it's not as bad as the time they were investigated because a customer had altered one of their NDT certs. The parts had gotten onto an aircraft and had to be removed because they were not the right parts for that application. Joe and Sue wish they could get rid of the paper and provide immediate online access to their documentation so that all of these problems could be resolved and they could make better use of their time.

This is not fantasy. This is what goes on within the aerospace supply chain every day. Contact an Aerospac representative to discuss Aerospac shipping solutions for your company.
